Vaping cannabis: what it is and how it differs from smoking

Vaping cannabis has become increasingly common. But what exactly is it, and how does it differ from smoking? We’ll explain it clearly, without exaggerating either the benefits or the risks.
What is vaping?
A vaporiser heats the cannabis to a temperature high enough to release the cannabinoids and terpenes in the form of vapour, but without actually burning it. As there is no combustion, no smoke is produced, unlike when smoking a joint.
Differences compared with smoking
- Non-combustion: Many of the substances produced when plant matter is burnt are avoided, although vaping is not without its risks.
- Tobacco-free: If you usually mix it with tobacco, vaping means you can do without it.
- Flavour: The terpenes are much more noticeable, particularly at low temperatures.
- Effect: It may feel different, and sometimes more intense than expected. Start off gently.
- Smell: Vapour smells less and dissipates more quickly than smoke.
Types of vaporiser
- Dry grass portables: the most common ones for flowers.
- After lunch: more powerful and precise, designed for home use.
- For extracts: designed for concentrates.
Caution regarding vapers and THC cartridges
A weed vaporiser should not be confused with THC oil cartridges of unknown origin. A few years ago, in the United States, there was an outbreak of serious lung injuries linked to illegal, adulterated cartridges. Avoid products that are unregulated and unlabelled.
Tips if you’re new to vaping
- Start on a low heat and gradually turn it up.
- Grind the herb evenly, without turning it into a powder.
- Clean the appliance regularly to preserve the flavour.
- Wait a few minutes between puffs to gauge the effect.
